We have heard this our whole
adult lives: you need to get 8 hours of sleep each night. Yeah, right…that’s not going to happen. You have the baby crying, the taxman calling,
the big presentation in the morning, etc.
But the Better Sleep Council really does recommend a minimum of 8 hours
of sleep every night, and the truth is 71% of us get less than 8 hours during
weeknights. These poor sleep habits can affect your immune system, your memory,
blood pressure, chronic pain, depression, your mood, weight gain and your
overall health. It’s no wonder your
mattress is considered the most important piece of furniture in your home.
So, what does this all mean to
you? Besides the basics of creating a
“sleep sanctuary” and turning off the TV, you need to cut down on the caffeine
and alcohol near bedtime and truly give in to winding down as your regular
bedtime gets near. Keep the bedroom dark and cool. And keep a notebook by the
bed to write down anything you need to do tomorrow or any worries that are
bothering you. Completely give in.
Lastly, you need a mattress that
fits and works with your body. The key word here is “your”. What if you and your sleep partner have
completely different comfort preferences?
As matter of fact, 9 out of every 10 couples have a different idea of
what comfort is to them, and everyone’s mattress needs are unique. What if she
weighs 130 pounds, and he is 210? They
are going to experience different comfort levels as well as require different
support levels.
To take it to another level, 3 of
the top 5 most common sleep problems affect virtually all couples: tossing
& turning (51% of all sleepers), lack of back support (42% of all sleepers
/ while one person might be supported, the other is not) and partner movement
(21% of all sleepers).
So, that leads you to the obvious
question: How do you find a mattress that can be perfect for 2 different
individuals? You can order a custom
mattress for sure. While that is an
option, it can be very pricey and take from 2-3 months to get delivered. And
when you both need a good night’s sleep, you need it now…not next quarter.
The other option would be to
purchase a mattress that features Dual Core technology. These mattresses have two separate cores of
both comfort and support that can easily be adjusted by unzipping the mattress
cover and simply flipping either of the inside cores. It’s just like a custom
mattress without the wait or expense of made-to-order beds. The Magniflex
mattress brand from Italy offers the Dual Core feature and is available at
many better-end furniture stores.
So, when you combine healthy
sleep habits with the right mattress, both you and your partner will be ready
to take on the daily grind. And you
won’t be as grumpy either.
